Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally. In 2018, cancer claimed 9.6 million lives. In 2018, Nigeria recorded 116, 000 new cases of cancer and 41,000 deaths from cancer.

Cancer is best treated when detected early. Early detection gives a patient about 80% chance of survival. Cancer can be treated through surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Experts say cancer is not something to be afraid of, but something to be aware of. Below are factors that predispose cancer:

  • Genetics: If a parent has cancer, there’s a possibility of the child having it.
  • Age: As we age, body organs become less functional.
  • Smoking is a huge risk factor. A stick of cigarette consists of over a hundred different carcinogens which are the causes of Cancer.
  • Unhealthy Eating: Eating all eatables.
  • Lack of physical activity.
  • Infections: Cancer can take advantage of low immune system caused by infections to creep into the body.

Steps to limiting possibility of cancer:

  • Healthy diet: Avoid meals detrimental to your health. Reduce intake of red meat. Eat more fruits and vegetables.
  • Engage in physical activities: Engage in exercises to get your body in the best shape possible.
  • Avoid carcinogens especially cigarettes.
  • Avoid being exposed to ionizing radiation.
  • Frequent medical check up to ensure early detection.
